Short answer
Intune fits organizations that manage mostly Windows devices and a modest number of Macs and want one console and one compliance engine for Conditional Access. Jamf fits Apple-heavy organizations that need deep macOS control, a polished self-service catalog and fast support for new Apple releases. Both use Apple Business Manager and Apple's MDM framework, and they can work together.
Key facts
- Both Intune and Jamf enroll Macs through Apple Business Manager and Automated Device Enrollment.
- Intune manages Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS and Android from one console.
- Jamf focuses only on Apple devices.
- Jamf can share Mac compliance with Microsoft so Conditional Access still works.
- Apple is moving management to declarative device management, which affects both tools.
The short comparison
Intune and Jamf both manage Macs through Apple's MDM protocol, so the basics are similar: zero-touch enrollment, configuration profiles, app deployment, FileVault enforcement and software update control. The difference is scope and depth. Intune is a cross-platform tool inside Microsoft 365. Jamf is built only for Apple and has a long history of macOS-specific tooling.
Use the table as a guide to stable differences. Check current features with each vendor, since both release updates often.
| Area | Microsoft Intune | Jamf |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Android | Apple devices only |
| Licensing | Included in Business Premium, E3 and E5 | Separate subscription |
| Enrollment | Apple Business Manager and Automated Device Enrollment | Apple Business Manager and Automated Device Enrollment |
| macOS depth | Settings catalog, shell scripts, custom profiles | Deep policy engine, scripts, inventory attributes and smart groups |
| Self-service apps | Company Portal | Self Service catalog with customizable branding |
| Conditional Access | Native device compliance in Entra ID | Through a compliance integration with Microsoft |
| Sign-in to Mac | Platform SSO with the Microsoft Enterprise SSO plug-in | Integrations for account and identity provider sign-in |
| Admin console | Same console as Windows and mobile | Separate Apple-focused console |
When Intune is the better fit
- Macs are a minority of your fleet and Windows is managed in Intune already.
- You want one compliance policy model for every device type feeding Conditional Access.
- You already own Intune through Business Premium, E3 or E5.
- Your Mac needs are standard: encryption, updates, Microsoft 365 apps, Wi-Fi and a few line-of-business apps.
- A small IT team cannot support two management consoles well.
When Jamf is the better fit
Jamf is a strong choice for Apple-first organizations. Choosing it does not mean giving up Microsoft security: Jamf can report Mac compliance to Microsoft so Entra ID Conditional Access can still require a compliant device for Microsoft 365.
- Most of your users are on Macs, iPads or iPhones.
- You need fine-grained macOS control, advanced scripting or detailed inventory reporting.
- Creative, engineering or education teams rely on a large self-service app catalog.
- You want Apple-specific features as early as possible after new OS releases.
- Your Mac admins already know Jamf well and have built mature workflows.
Planning for declarative device management
Apple is shifting device management from older MDM commands toward declarative device management, where the device enforces declared state and reports back. Software updates are among the first areas to change. Both Intune and Jamf support this shift, but older profiles and update policies may need to be rebuilt.
Whichever tool you choose, inventory legacy profiles and software update settings, test new declarative policies on a pilot group, and plan time each year around Apple's fall releases.
Moving Macs from Jamf to Intune
If you consolidate on Intune, plan it as a device migration. Rebuild Jamf policies as Intune configuration profiles and scripts, set up the Apple Business Manager token and enrollment profile in Intune, then reassign devices in Apple Business Manager from Jamf to Intune.
Devices enrolled through Automated Device Enrollment usually need to be unenrolled and re-enrolled, and some may need a wipe to apply a new supervised enrollment. Pilot with IT staff and a friendly department first, and confirm FileVault recovery keys are escrowed in Intune before retiring Jamf.
- Export Jamf policies, profiles, scripts and app lists.
- Rebuild in Intune and test on spare devices.
- Move devices in waves, with clear user instructions.
- Verify compliance, app delivery and recovery key escrow after each wave.
